Storm Eye Institute : Storm Eye Institute : John E. Weaver, MD

John E. Weaver, M.D. is a Clinical Instructor in ophthalmology at the Medical University of South Carolina ( MUSC) specializing in Comprehensive Ophthalmology with a special interest in small incision cataract surgery.

Dr. Weaver joined the MUSC faculty in 2002 as a comprehensive ophthalmologist with Storm Eye Institute. From 1988-95, he served as chair of the Ophthalmology Department at the Naval Hospital in Charleston, earning the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal. He retired as a captain in the U.S. Navy in 1995.

Prior to his assignment at the Naval Hospital in Charleston Dr Weaver served as chairman of the Ophthalmology Department in Okinawa, Japan from 1985-1988 where he was an advanced trauma life support instructor. Following his Navy career Dr. Weaver served as a comprehensive ophthalmologist with Charlotte Eye Ear Nose and Throat from 1995-2002.

Board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Weaver holds medical licensure in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. In addition to MUSC and the Veteran’s Hospital, he has hospital privileges at East Cooper Regional Medical Center in Mt. Pleasant and Roper Hospital in Charleston.

Dr. Weaver earned his medical degree from MUSC in 1978. He served an internship in basic medicine at the Naval Hospital in San Diego and earned certification from the National Board of Medical Examiners the following year. He received his residency training at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1979-82 and ophthalmic surgical fellowship in conjunction with the International Eye Foundation in Cairo, Egypt, in 1981.

Dr. Weaver is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.  Publications include papers on filtering valve implant surgery and focal dermal hypoplasia.
